I used to be terrified of flying because I almost fell out of an airplane when I was 5 years old.
My dad had a small plane and he took me flying one day. I was in the passenger seat. The door on my side suddenly burst open when we were 10,000 feet up. It felt like I was getting sucked out of the plane. I screamed. I can still hear the howl of the wind and feel the terror of the moment if I let myself go there. My dad threw himself on top of me to hold me down and he was able to latch the door but not lock it. We made an emergency landing at the big international airport.
This experience was so traumatic for me that for years, I used to throw up every time I even got near an airport. I have thrown up in more planes than I can count. I used to hate flying.
How did I overcome this fear and create a life that lets me travel as much as I like? I turned to meditation to rewire my brain. I used meditation, tapping, journaling and bunch of other neurojuju to transform my fear into freedom.
Now when I fly, I have a whole new perspective on it. I see flying as a metaphor for uplevelling in life.
Flying and the Subconscious Mind. Video courtesy of Deborah J Fryer, PhD
You literally take off from where you are to get to where you want to go. And before you know it, you are THERE. You create your reality the same way — by knowing that where you are is the jumping off point that inevitable results in where you are going.
You can get there from here, as long as you set your inner coordinates to match where you want to go. Being precise in your thinking makes all the difference. If you want to fly around the equator, and you are off by just one degree, you’ll miss your mark by 500 miles. If you say you want to make more money, but your inner thinking is telling you that money is dangerous, do you think you’ll ever make more money? You’ll do whatever it takes to avoid it. Your subconscious mind is the pilot of the plane. That’s why it’s so important to set your inner direction deliberately and continually course correct for the entire journey (i.e., the rest of your life). Choose your destination and book your ticket to where you want to land— Freedom, Joy, Ease and Happiness are my top vacation destinations. I spend a lot of time in these cities because I love being there.
You shift your perspective from the immediate, limited environment you can see of where you are to the bigger, vaster perspective of what else is out there. When you shift your perspective, everything shifts.
As an entrepreneur, I used to be just as scared to make money as I was to fly. My whole nervous system freaked out every time I thought about being an authority or being visible or making more money than I ever had before (where I wanted to go). I was scared to let go of my victim consciousness (where I was). So instead of letting myself step into my own greatness, I grounded myself. That felt safer than uplevelling… until it didn’t.
I eventually reached a point where playing small and scared was scarier than doing the inner work to uplevel in every area of my life. You have to get to that place in your own heart where staying in current circumstances (emotional, financial, physical, spiritual) is MORE PAINFUL than facing your fears or you will never change.
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
~ Anaïs Nin
Uplevelling is a lot like an airplane flight.
When a plane starts to rise above the ceiling (the clouds), there’s usually turbulence. The ride can be very bumpy. You often can’t see the blue sky above. All you can see is clouds. You brace yourself for the discomfort. And it turns out that the nothing bad happens. You endure a few bumps along the way and then you’re in clear blue sky and the scary thing is no longer even on your radar. All around you is openness and vastness.
This is true of your mindset as well. If you are trying to uplevel to the next level of emotional, physical, spiritual or financial freedom, and it feels scary, know that your mind is creating the illusion of fear. Your beliefs are creating the ceiling. Your beliefs are telling you, “I can’t see the result so therefore the result can’t possibly exist.”
KNOW THIS: Beyond your fear, beyond the ceiling you have been living under or earning under, is an open sky of limitless possibility.
That openness is always there, whether or not you can see it. That’s the truth of you, too. You are vaster and more expansive that you have ever imagined.
“You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.”
~ Toni Morrison, Song of Solomon
